Will the Sagrada Familia really be finished by 2026? It would be amazing, would’t it? However, there are still quite a few things to be done; and although the works progress at a good pace, the experts say that it is not certain that it may be finished by 2026, as there will be important projects still to be done, such as the artistic part and the surroundings of the basilica.

The works are progressing quickly and with a very good pace, to the extent that in 2018 the works of the facade of the Passion were completed and the construction of the tower of Jesus Christ began. During 2019 the great team of the Sagrada Familia continues to work hard and this is all that will be finished by the end of the year:

1 THE TEMPLE WILL SHOW OFF A NEW PROFILE, CHANGING BARCELONA’S ICONIC SKYLINE

If there is an iconic image of the temple, it is that of the sideways of the four bell towers of the facades trimmed in the sky. But during this 2019 the skyline will change as the central towers will continue to grow. By the end of the year, 604 of the 768 tensioned- stone panels that the towers will have, will be put in place, i.e. 79% of the total panels planned for their construction. By the end of the year, the central towers will have surpassed the bell towers at the ends of the Nativity and Passion facades, which will reach 98.5 and 102 meters, respectively.

2 THE FINAL PART OF THE EVANGELISTS’ TOWERS WILL BE DEFINED

The towers of the Evangelists will be culminates by the four figures with which Christian iconography has traditionally represented them: an angel representing Matthew, a lion for Mark, a bull for Luke, and an eagle for John. However, we will have to wait until 2022

to see them at the temple.

3 THE SYMBOLOGY OF THE INSIDE OF THE TOWER OF JESUS CHRIST

In the meantime, from the street you will be able to clearly see the growth of the central tower, which, with its 172.5 meters high, will be the highest of the temple. During 2019, the tower of Jesus Christ is being built on the inside. In fact, there will be a stone core that will contain a glass elevator which will allow to ascend up to 143.5 meters in height. The symbolism of the interior walls of the tower will be based on a phrase from Jesus collected in the Gospels: “I am the way, the truth and the life”.

4 FACADE OF THE GLORY: THE BASIC PROJECT WILL BE FINISHED

To see the first interventions on the facade of the Glory, which will be the main access to the temple once finished, we will have to wait for the work in the central towers to be finished, by 2022,. However, previous works are already underway to make this happen. During this year the basic project of the facade of the Glory will be completed, which will define the basic shapes of the columns, the narthex, the chapels and the symbology of this facade.
